E-mail Basics

E-mail Accounts

To send and receive e-mail, a user must have an e-mail account.  This account reserves space on a central computer (a server) where mail is stored in a file labeled with the user's name and a password. All ARCC students are required to activate Metnet Email Accounts.  Go to  Metnet Email Services at http://www.metnet.edu/email/  and follow the instructions to initialize your own e-mail account. Once you have opened your account, you can access your mail by using any Internet browser to go to your e-mail address.

Passwords

The most effective user passwords are 6 to 10 characters long and use a combination of letters and numbers. Generally, words that are in the dictionary do not make good passwords. Do not use your social security number, your phone number, nor your birthday as a password either. Say I wanted to use the word password as the basis for creating a password for my e-mail account. I might mix in numbers so that it looks something like this: p2ssw8rd. You want to make your password easy for you to remember and difficult for others to guess.
