Workshop Description

We will begin with an orientation to Desire2Learn as an example of instructional management software.  Then we'll take an Internet tour of what others are doing. We will look at a course published in D2L, Blackboard, FrontPage, and  Netscape Composer. These will give us a variety of examples of the basic components of course web sites: the course plan, homepage, page templates and site navigation, the teacher's syllabus, course content pages, interactive elements, assessment strategies, and course management tools. By the end of the workshop, you should be prepared to select software for creating a course web site, and you should be able to draft a site plan that includes the basic elements we've discussed.

Workshop Formats

Self-paced: you may begin work at any time and complete the modules at your convenience.

Scheduled Online Workshop: In this format, the workshop has fixed start and end dates. Throughout the three weeks of the workshop you will not only work independently on your project, but you may also have the opportunity to interact on-line with the workshop leader and other participants by e-mail and asynchronous discussion.

Onsite: This professional development workshop may be completed on-site in two half-day sessions. Online Course Design II may be offered in two consecutive half-day sessions. Content and presentation will be customized to your groups' needs. To arrange for an onsite workshop, please contact Elizabeth Nist.

Online Course Design has two interlinked Web sites: this open access site at the WorldWide Writers' PLACE and a companion site in D2L. The purpose for having these two sites is to give workshop participants the opportunity to experience working online in two different contexts.
Please see the Differences in Open Access and Controlled Access Web Sites.
